ROKA Opens Amazing Summer Roof Terrace Pop-up in Collaboration with Suntory Whisky

(Drinking Trends) – To me, whisky drinkers generally fall into one of two camps – one being the Pete Doherty-esque party-goers who mix with coke (the drinking kind), and the other being the whisky purists, choosing to drink it neat or on-the-rocks. Even the cocktail enthusiast in me doesn’t readily conjure up images of whisky as anything else. Yet Suntory Chita Single Grain Whisky has proven that the right whisky can be far more versatile and can give any other spirit a run for its money with casual drinkers. And the Chita launch on the Roka terrace in Canary Wharf in conjunction with the Suntory pop-up bar running until the 5th of September was truly amazing.

Starting with a Japanese inspired highball cocktail with soda water and coconut mixer, the drink was light and refreshing. The honey and caramel tones of the whisky went well with the hint of coconut in the cocktail. The delicate balance of flavours paired well with the subtleties of sushi and there was no risk of the whisky overpowering.

The Chita cooler was a fresh and zesty cocktail with a lime foam, which the Chita whisky complemented perfectly. The drink was light and refreshing, and was well balanced by the savoury addition of basil.

The Manhattan style Red Gold Hook cocktail mixed Chita whisky with sake and red vermouth, and was robust and earthy. The richness and depth of the cocktail paired well with the smokiness of grilled meat.

Having tried Chita whisky neat, I found the flavours were overpowered by the taste of alcohol (a weighty 43%), so this whisky works best when mixed. The range of cocktails showed how well this whisky integrates and complements a host of flavours regardless of whether they are robust or delicate, proving Chita whisky is a great choice for any occasion.

Any whisky connoisseur that happens to be in London from now until September 5th needs to visit Roka in Canary Wharf and taste this fine tipple. Top marks.

“We are excited to be collaborating with Suntory for the launch of Suntory Chita Single Grain Whisky. The prominent notes in the whisky really inspired our team in the development of each cocktail.  There are heavy floral and tropical flavours of mango and pineapple that very much complement the ingredients in the Chita Cooler, on the other hand there are also spicy woody tones that work well in the Red Gold Hook.” -Simon Freeth, ROKA’s Bar Development Manager

The pop-up terrace will open daily from 12pm – 12am Monday to Friday and 6pm – 12pm Saturdays. Bar food will be available throughout the pop-up from ROKA’s esteemed kitchen, served from 12pm-3pm and 5:30pm -11pm Monday – Friday and 6pm – 11pm on Saturdays. The terrace will close on 5th September.
